WHEREAS,
the Rock & Roll Library is a non-profit organization working to promote the
use of popular music in education; and
WHEREAS, a lesson contest was held by the Rock & Roll Library for educators
to promote understanding, peace and tolerance, through the medium of Melissa
Etheridge's song "Scarecrow;" and
WHEREAS, Thomas O. Hopkins Middle School teacher, Laura Stegmuller, created a
powerful lesson to promote these tenets of understanding, peace and tolerance;
and
WHEREAS, the Rock & Roll Library continues to promote tolerance and
diversity through education by making the winning lessons of their contest
available to the general public without cost via their website,
www.Rocklibrary.com; and
WHEREAS, the Rock & Roll Library brought Grammy Award-winning recording
artist Melissa Etheridge to speak on a discussion panel on Tolerance for the
students and parents of Thomas O. Hopkins Middle School in Burlington, New
Jersey; and
WHEREAS, the New Jerseyans have benefited by the dedication and service of the
Rock & Roll Library, and its "Scarecrow" Song Lesson Contest;
NOW, THERFORE, I, JAMES E. McGREEVEY, Governor of the State of New Jersey, do
hereby proclaim
April 11, 2002

Tolerance
Day
In New Jersey and recognize this community-based non-profit organization for
its contributions in education and promoting positive social change by
encouraging our children to practice tolerance and express compassion for our
fellow man.
